Responsibilities

Identifies specific needs of the patient and anesthesia care provider in relation to anesthesia supplies needed  prior, during and after surgical intervention under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist. Responsible for keeping the Surgical Services Department clean and organized.  Competency will be maintained in accordance with criteria defined by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologist and Technicians (ASATT).

  • Locates and uses personal protective equipment as applicable.
  • May set up other equipment such as blood warmers, hypothermia blanket, etc.
  • Responsible for the cleaning, routine maintenance and repair of anesthesia equipment.
  • Changes soda lime according to policy and procedures.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Checks all resuscitative equipment prior to the beginning of the first surgery of the day.  Reports malfunctioning or missing equipment to the Director of Anesthesia and the Surgical Services Nurse Manager immediately.
  • Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments.  Performs general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, storage cabinets and all storage areas.
  • Communicates anesthesia changes to Circulating Nurse.
  • Assists Circulating RN to move patient to OR tables and position patient.
  • Maintains difficult airway cart.
  • Coordinates in-services with staff in regards to anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Possesses knowledge, experience and is competent to assist with care for the ages of patients served.
  • Functions as a resource to all staff and other depts.
  • Ensures correct patient and procedure.
  • Responsible for maintaining and running cell saver machine.
  • Understands operations of anesthesia machine, monitors, CO2 analyzers, O2 sat analyzers.
  • Assists physicians in induction process of patient, keeping patient safety a priority.
  • Maintains good interdepartmental relationships by providing the highest level of services, assistance and open communication.
  • Maintains high productivity.  Initiates interventions without prompting.
  • Performs efficiently regardless of fluctuations in work volume.
  • Adheres to policy and procedures for proper handling of blood, body fluids, and hazardous materials.
  • Monitors and records temperature of fluid and blanket warmers; ensures they are stocked.
  • Stock fluid cart daily.
  • Stock ORs with linen daily.
  • Places orders for masks, hats, shoe covers, gloves, positioning foam, scrub solutions, etc., as needed.
  • Monitors and stocks hats, masks and booties in locker rooms.
  • Stocks masks and scrub solutions at scrub sink.
  • Ensures each surgical suite has a linen hamper and regular and hazardous waste bags.
  • Wet mops surgical suites between cases and changes linen on bed.  Replaces mop head after each case.
  • Wipes all surfaces with disinfectant between cases.
  • Disposes of all linens, regular waste, hazardous waste and sharps containers in the appropriate waste disposal area.
  • Retrieves patient beds for inpatients to be transferred onto before going to PACU.
  • Participates in recognition program and recognizes the contribution of others.
  • Utilizes Relationship based care by consistently placing personal relationships between caregivers, patients/families and self at the center of care delivery.  Every employee at THCDS is a caregiver. 
  • Adheres to Performance Standards and Professional Requirements as outlined in the Performance Standards handbook.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Certified Anesthesia Technician preferred through the National Certification Examination in Anesthesia Technology administered by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians. Current BCLS.
  • Associates or BS degree in a healthcare field preferred or completion of in-house anesthesia technician training program.
